About Seido-en Forest House

Seido-en is a unique, award-winning natural building on Salt Spring Island

Architectural Vision

Seido-en Forest House was built in 1994 by well-known natural-earth architect Meror Krayenhoff and owner Wendy Webb.

When I created Seido-en, I really wanted to have a place where people didn’t think about the outside world, but instead go within, be peaceful and let things open up. I got a good feeling when I came to Salt Spring Island. I loved the way this land flowed, how the shadows move. It took me a while to choose a builder, who appreciated the Japanese aesthetic and we really worked to express the many elements of that, of emulating nature. The root is nature. Nature inspires. We’re all connected to it.

In 1996, Seido-en Forest House won a Gold Construction Award and was featured on the cover of Cottage Magazine. Articles about Seido-en have been published in the Vancouver Sun, Victoria Times-Colonist, Calgary Herald, Ottawa Citizen, Gulf Islands Driftwood, and Western Living Magazine — all featuring its unique nature, design and the Seido-en Forest House experience.

Seido-En is a magical, restorative and contemplative sanctuary that deeply supported our desire to disentangle ourselves from the claims of our familiar urban life. We found Wendy to be incredibly helpful and responsive to any of our needs. The location afforded a lot of privacy with convenient access to the Salish Sea via a short 15 minute hike, which we enjoyed on an almost daily basis. The place itself has a very maternal, calming quality that we found deeply comforting and serene. The kitchen is well equipped, so we were able to be entirely self-sufficient and never needed to leave to eat out. We highly recommend anyone to consider staying at Seido-en.
